A previous review of educators from more than 700 secondary schools showed that several students leave primary school with a limited vocabulary for their age. According to the research, four out of 10 students have this limitation which affects their learning. As children grow up, there are several ways to help them improve their vocabulary.
Parents need to start training or teaching their kids as soon as possible. Below is a list of things you can do to help your child.
Reading & Conversing

Get used to the idea of reading to your kid from birth. Whether they can understand you or not, it is necessary to make this a habit. Reading to your kid exposes them to new words and increases their curiosity to want to know more.
Apart from reading get your kid used to the idea of conversing whether you can comprehend what they say or not. This way, you build your kid’s confidence making them learn faster and boosting their knowledge.
Playing Word Games
Many parents underlook the impact that word games have on children. When you get your kid used to playing word games, they rapidly improve their vocabulary. A kid’s desire to learn more words is driven by the urge to win the games.
Games like Scrabble, hangman, and others are exciting and educational at the same time. Apart from games, the use of labels around the house is effective in teaching kids new words.
Watching Educational Films
Films also play an important role in helping build your child’s vocabulary. However, most of the content available is not suitable for children. Avoid exposing kids to films meant for mature audiences. This can lead to kids promoting and practising vulgar language and behaviour to some extent.
While your kid is watching educational movies, you can guide them and help where necessary. Motivate your child to learn on their own. This way, it is easy for them to progress and further their knowledge, even without the help of the parent.
Socializing
Get used to taking your child out to functions and places where he/she can socialize with other children. Once your toddler starts to socialize, the need for better communication with his/her peers will push for a boost in vocabulary and improvement of speech.
Using the tips mentioned above, along with the right parental guidelines, training your kid during early childhood should not be a hard task.
